Andy Vass
I first met Andy several years ago when he submitted some new material to my Artist management company for consideration. I had a few artists on my Rosta who were looking for the "Hit" song that would break them into the mainstream. I was immediately impressed with his ear for melody and the variety of different musical styles he could write in, and how passionate he was about music in general. In fact I believe someone challenged Andy to write and produce an album of songs and each track had to be a different style! Although the music industry has changed beyond recognition in recent years, I was pleased to be asked to write a review on a compilation of some of his best work, so I will be as objective as I can be.
The stand out ballad "Love Is All We Really Need To Feel" has the potential to be a hit song for any aspiring Girl/Boy band or established vocalist. It has a beautiful 3 part harmony which increases in intensity as the song progresses. The middle section is emotionally gripping and powerful and the meaning is communicated with great sensitivity. A real stand out track!.
A Christmas song to review? Well it's a joyful little bouncy song that will surely have you and the family up dancing-A Quo party anthem with all the trimmings. I can't argue with that!
I was not expecting what came next-"Snowflake" has a thunderous intro' and almost machine gun like vocal delivery on the take of modern life and politics. Andy stated to me that this was his "American Pie" -Lyrically it's very disguised so I have quoted some lyrics- "Your smile could split the atom and move hell into my bed" and "Champagne Socialism spinning the rhetoric" -Indeed, honest and provocative and clever. Great chorus, catchy and punchy and for the right band a hit for sure. The gap between these tracks is poignant -I mean transitioning from a ballad into punk / rock is almost shocking and from the same writer?
"Stay with Me Tonight" is smoky blues/jazz and shuffles in all the right places. Really impressive with a high falsetto lead vocal on the chorus, and backing vocals that hit you from the left and the right side. I really like this one-It's catchy as a cold!
"The One I'll Always Love" is another potential mainstream chart hit -It's pop/rock-Sung well, again clever vocal harmonies layered and textured and a rock guitar backing throughout. The lead guitar at the end is worth listening to "Shades of Gary Moore."
And again -up next what's this? A kids "TV" jingle about a magic cat called "Blossom"- Apparently written on request of a Publisher-this could be the catchiest little tune I've ever heard! -And less than a minute long? Great overlapping harmonies with a gem of an ending-Very clever indeed.
A Live recording of "Things are getting better" This sounds quite high energy and has that Live vibe-A strong chorus that repeats itself and a great sounding keyboard back this potential chart hit!
Shades of mid' 90's Indie music with "She's Not here! A quirky, catchy Sing-A-Long tune - I found myself humming along to the chorus by the end. -Is that the Leslie effect I hear-authentic Hammond organ with rotating speakers on there?-Yes It sounds like it is! Nice!
"Erotic pop?"-well "Sexy Baby" is a catchy tune and could be a hit for the right artist-A speedy little guitar solo in the mid' section, and I really like the way he sings "Why don't you take me to your bed!" Brave or What?
The next track to review is the simply stunning "Leave Me Never." I've listened to this several times with headphones on late at night with a glass of wine in my hand, and it is quite exquisite. Great songwriters often excel with ballads, and this is possibly the best track in my review-Lilting, Emotional, and lyrically heart rendering, it is a clear demonstration of Andy's extraordinary Song writing talent- and in waltz time?- A treat.
"Out Love Will Never Die" -Another beautiful ballad recorded with a classical guitar this time. Nice versatility, and again-a further example of Andy's talent and ear for melody. The guitar and voice sound very "Connected" -like they might be recorded at the same time? It's a hard feeling to capture. The sentiment of the song is heart rendering and I would say that the vocal delivery on this track is quite exceptional. It's not "in tune" perfect-But the communication is believable in a way that the listener can understand-from the heart.
"Move me" is another potential hit for the right artist-It rocks in places -especially near the end-Nice chord structure and a great little guitar solo (Almost Jimmy Page") in the mid' section. "You really move me baby I love the things you do." Oh to be a teenager in the back seat of that car again!- Yes please! Its a 9/10 from me -great versatility and creativity- Enjoy!
